Character: Cora Davidson

Episode #2.1 - Gently with the innocents

3 March 2009 - BBC1

Gently and Bacchus investigate when elderly Alfred Peachment is found murdered in the grounds of the large house where he lived alone, formerly a children's home which he superintended but now closed for several years. The house was being sold, against his wishes, by a committee headed by his ex-wife and her brother, the local doctor, to the seemingly callous property developer Cora Davidson. Harry, Alfred's mute, simple-minded gardener, is the chief suspect and he attacks Bacchus. Only overly helpful local copper Blacksmith seems able to communicate with the boy, causing Bacchus to resent him. A discussion with an old flame leads Gently to suspect that Peachment may have been a paedophile, abusing children in his care, and that any of the suspects may be acting alone or as a group of avengers, to punish him for past misdeeds.

Can the arrival of hard-nosed public school idealist Mr Treneman really turn things around? Or would these troubled teens benefit more from the sympathetic approach of his colleague and sparring partner Kim Campbell?

The lives and loves of the teachers, parents and pupils become inextricably intertwined in this gritty, engaging and ultimately uplifting drama, in which those who can, teach, and those who can't have a lot to learn…

On the day that Kev should be happily celebrating his 35th birthday, his mother throws herself from her balcony. He's stricken with shock and grief, and to add to his woes the last person he expects to see again at her funeral is Roxy - his ex-wife - who's straight out of prison. Veronica is fuming and to make matters worse, Kev fails to come home after the wake. Thinking he's turned his mother's flat into a bachelor pad, Veronica storms round there... only to be greeted by a naked Roxy.

She is heartbroken and resolves to leave Kev once and for all. It seems nothing more could go wrong in Kev's complicated life, that is until Roxy drops the bombshell that they once had a child together. Kev is torn between the idea of having a child and the feeling that this is just Roxy's latest scheme to try and win him back. However, she soon shows her true colours when Kev refuses to succumb to her advances. Realising that Roxy is far from the reformed character she claims to be, Kev finds her at Veronica's house just in the nick of time.

Carol, meanwhile has found herself a new gentleman-friend, Norman Owens. He seems to be a perfect gent and exactly what she's been searching for, until he joins the family for breakfast, in the nude. It seems he has more liberal views about sex than the rest of them. Fatherhood has had a positive effect on Lip, but while he and Mandy get closer, Veronica is convinced it's over between her and Kev. That is, until they get some special news they've been waiting for...
